Read this first: what a booth photo can still be used for
Germany changed the rules in 2025. A printed photo from a booth no longer works for an ID card or passport. Checked 2026-10-26 against official pages:
- ID card (Personalausweis) and passport (Reisepass) — Printed photo accepted? No (since 1 May 2025)
Printed photos are no longer accepted. Since 1 May 2025 the authority needs a digital photo: taken at the citizens’ office’s own self-service terminal, or by a registered photo provider who sends it encrypted and gives you a DataMatrix code. Paper photos were accepted as a transitional exception only until 31 July 2025.

Same rule as ID cards and passports: digital photos only since 1 May 2025.
Official source: Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), 28 Apr 2025 - Driving licence (Führerschein) — Printed photo accepted? Yes
Paper photos are still accepted: the digital-only rule covers ID documents, not driving licences (Stuttgart says a printed biometric photo is still required). Local practice can differ — check with your driving licence office (Führerscheinstelle) before you go.

We do not know which Fotofix booths, if any, can send a photo digitally to the authorities with a DataMatrix code. The official locator does not say so for any location, so this site does not claim it for any location.
For visas and other countries’ documents, the rules are set by the issuing embassy or authority — check their own photo requirements.

Source and limits
- Source: Fotofix’s official store locator (fotofix.de/store-locator), all locations read 2026-10-26. Every location is listed by Fotofix in its “Fotoautomat” category.
- Fotofix says it has “over 2,000” machines, print terminals and copiers; we only count what its locator lists. A location may have more than one machine — the locator does not say.
- We do not publish the locator’s per-location service tags: they still say every booth does ID-card photos, which is no longer true for printed photos (see the table at the top).
