Japanese ID photo sizes

A Japanese ID photo booth does not ask you for millimetres. It asks you to pick a purpose — résumé, driving licence, passport — and lays the sheet out accordingly. So you need to know which category your document falls into before you step in.

Prices vary by machine and location, and the price on the machine’s screen is final. What each operator publishes on its own website is collected on ID photo booth prices in Japan.

The three common sizes

SizeMain documents
45×35 mm
4.5×3.5 cm
Japanese passport, My Number Card
40×30 mm
4.0×3.0 cm
Résumé (rirekisho), Residence card application, National civil service exam, Information-processing licence, Disability certificate, Electrician licence
30×24 mm
3.0×2.4 cm
Japanese driving licence, Eiken grades 1–3, Amateur radio licence, Telecom chief engineer exam, Boiler engineer licence, Health supervisor licence, Unemployment benefit claim

Why the menu asks for a purpose, not a size

Because the layout on the sheet differs. Ki-Re-i's official page explains the passport / My Number sheet as three frames at the top for passport and My Number Card applications and three below for other certificates; on the driving-licence sheet the top two frames are a medium size and only the bottom four are licence size. Pick the wrong purpose and you get the right size in the wrong layout. (Ki-Re-i official size chart)

Cutting it out

Ki-Re-i states that the printed sheet carries a 1mm scale to cut against, and that the touch panel shows a reference size. (Ki-Re-i official page) ID VOX states its machines cover 93 sizes (the page dates that figure to 2024年7月) and include an automatic image check after shooting. (ID VOX official site)

Taiwanese passports are also 4.5×3.5 cm

Same size as a Japanese passport, so picking "passport" on the machine matches. The background must be pure white and beauty mode off — see the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office notice.

Sources and limits

This page records what each operator publishes. We reproduce it; we are not the rule. Photo specifications are set by each issuing authority and do change.

The size-to-document table is quoted from Ki-Re-i's official "ID photo size chart" (that page dates its own data to 2023年5月). The official page itself says to always check the issuing authority's own site for current rules.

An official list only shows that an operator says a booth is there — not that it is still working today. Check with the host store or station before you make a special trip.

This is an independent, neutral directory with no affiliation to the operators listed. It does not rank or recommend any of them.
